Spring Historic House GalaOn May 28, 2008, Greater Portland Landmarks hosted the Spring Historic House Gala, celebrating the 101st birthday of the Richard Webb House! Of all of John Calvin Stevens Colonial Revival residences, this was his professed favorite. The home has been carefully stewarded by Peter and Barbara Shaw for the last 24 years, and features a gorgeous sweeping staircase and trademark Stevens touches such as rich woodwork and beautifully proportioned spaces. The event featured a catered reception, live jazz piano music and presentations by Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr., Director of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and Christopher Monkhouse, Chief Curator of European Decorative Arts at the Art Institute of Chicago. The event was a wonderful success, with tickets selling out well in advance of expectations. Greater Portland Landmarks plans to present the Gala again next year at another beautiful historic home. Proceeds from the event will benefit our educational programming highlighting the unique historic architecture that makes greater Portland one of the country’s most desirable places to live.
