Greater Portland Landmarks - Advocacy - New Construction

New Construction in Historic Contexts

GPL supports high quality new architecture that is designed to relate well to its context. In Portland, those characteristics include pedestrian friendliness, human scale, and the use of high quality materials. We support designs that are honestly of our own time, not copies of historic buildings, and that use a variety of materials from traditional brick and granite, to metal and glass. Examples of buildings that we believe are successful in achieving these goals are:

  • the addition to the Chase Leavitt building at 10 Dana Street, designed by David Lloyd
  • the addition to the Blake Warehouse at 93 Commercial Street, designed by David Lloyd
  • the new housing and retail building at 492 Congress Street, designed by Jim Sterling
  • the Gulf of Maine Research Institute, designed by EHDD Architecture of San Francisco, with local partner SMRT
