Greater Portland Landmarks - Advocacy - Policy Positions

Taking a stand.

Since its founding in 1964, GPL has viewed historic preservation advocacy as one of its most important roles. In Portland, GPL is a regular participant at Planning Board, City Council, Historic Preservation Board workshops and hearings, and master planning committees. GPL staff and volunteers monitor development proposals, policies, and zoning changes that affect historic properties and neighborhoods. The Public Issues Committee meets regularly to discuss current issues and to formulate GPL’s positions and develop strategy on the issues. While GPL focuses most of its efforts on issues in the city of Portland, the Public Issues Committee also considers issues in surrounding communities.
